La canzone è del 1996 ma avevo circa sedici anni quando ho ascoltato per la prima volta If it makes you happy tutta intera, nella mia testa per anni è stata solo il jingle dei bellissimi di rete 4.
Foglio bianco e pennarello nero alla mano scrivo il ritornello della canzone e lo attacco in camera: “If it makes you happy it can’t be that bad, if it makes you happy then why the hell are you so sad?”
La domanda è provocatoria e forse senza una risposta, se ti fa felice perché sei così triste? Credo che il destinatario della canzone sia un ex fidanzato o qualcosa di simile che dice alla cara Sheryl che ora è più felice senza riuscire a persuaderla del fatto che veramente lo sia… Una nuova ragazza o una nuova strada o forse parla di una qualche dipendenza vista l’ultima criptica strofa; e le domande in questa canzone son tante: perché non sei felice se sembra che le cose non vadano poi così male? Perché non sono il tipo di ragazza che porteresti a casa? Cosa c’è di giusto se sembra che sia tutto sbagliato?
Sheryl Crow non è una sprovveduta nonostante il video potentemente anni 90 lo possa far pensare.
